Course Reflection-679

There were three takeaways from this course that I feel will help me as an educator when incorporating technology into my classroom.  The first was learning about Genius Hour. It was nice to participate in our class while learning from others and our specific topic.  I have now properly disposed of all the extra paint I had in my house! Learning about Genius Hour was also nice to think about how to integrate this for my students.  When we first went 1:1 and students received their Chromebooks, they naturally wanted to jump right in and check it out but didn't quite know where to start.  I had the students explore the site “Wonderopolis” and they had fun researching random questions they didn’t have the answers to.  When given a choice in our learning, we tend to be more invested and create a product of pride rather than just checking boxes off a to do list. Another thing I am excited to use next school year is Quizlet.  I feel this will be so engaging for students and allow them to learn and study content in a way that best fits their learning. Finally, I really enjoyed working with Rubistar. Depending on the assignment, I feel that rubrics can provide a lot of foundation for students.  It gives them the expectations so they are able to make sure all the components of their work are secure. As a teacher, I despise making rubrics because there can be so many loopholes if something is not worded properly. By clicking a grade level standard, Rubistar generates a rubric which can then be modified based on what is needed.

Jessica, I agree with you on your statement about the importance of student choice, "When given a choice in our learning, we tend to be more invested and create a product of pride rather than just checking boxes off a to do list." You seem like a teacher who is not afraid to try new things and continually helping students to improve their learning by incorporating student choice! I have never tried "Wonderopolis", and can't wait to try it!

  2. Jessica, I also agree with your comments about student choice. As adults in class several weeks ago, we learned that when given a choice to research a Genius Hour topic, we all learned something! It was nice to be placed in student shoes and experience the feeling that what I was learning mattered to me. That feeling is something I'd love to duplicate with my students. I always strive to "up" the level of engagement, and I think you'd agree, we came away from this class with many tools for learning and assessment. Thanks for using your experience to be a great resource for all who were in our class!

I agree with your comment about rubrics setting a foundation for our students, "It gives them the expectations so they are able to make sure all the components of their work are secure." I also like using Rubistar and will look for more ways to use it with my team this year as well. Quizlet is also on my list to use more regularly. I have enjoyed taking this cohort with you and I feel like we have a lot of great tools to help guide us. Alison

    I also was pleased with the takeaways from this course. The digital rubric project I completed will be very useful for project based learning within my classroom next year. I also enjoyed the opportunity to experience Genius Hour for myself. It gave me a true sense of motivation and I am excited to be incorporating Passion Projects with my 4th graders next school year.
